Mike Kelly has more than 35 years of experience in the representation of commercial banks and other financial institutions, with extensive involvement in commercial and real estate loan documentation, Uniform Commercial Code (Articles 8 and 9), asset-based lending, automotive dealer finance, letters of credit, problem loan workouts, creditors’ rights, bankruptcies, reorganizations, lender liability litigation, bank operations and deposit and collection procedures. He also has extensive experience in commercial real estate development, including golf course acquisition, operation and financing.

Mike represents several national and regional companies in the financial services industry. He frequently speaks to loan officers of various banks and financial institutions on lending procedures and documentation, Uniform Commercial Code (Articles 8 and 9), loan loss and lender liability avoidance, problem loan workout procedures, and bankruptcies and reorganizations.

He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is a member of the United Way Keel Club and is past president of the Norfolk Forum and the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.

Mike received his Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.

  • Represented national lender in multi-year, multi-court complex litigation. The representation began in state court with an action by the lender to take possession of new and used automobiles that served as collateral for "floor plan" lending. The auto dealer counter-sued and raised business tort claims. The state court case was dismissed and the dealer moved to federal court and asserted new causes of action on the same claims.
