As a lawyer, investment banker and principal, Bob brings extensive experience in buying, selling and recapitalizing operating companies. His legal expertise is strengthened by his business experience. In 1988, Bob co-founded Carter Kaplan & Co., a Richmond-headquartered investment and merchant bank. There, he headed the firm’s corporate investment banking practice while managing a municipal underwriting practice as well.

In 1996, Bob co-founded the leveraged buyout sponsor firm Columbia Naples Capital, where he served as a managing director. During the ensuing six years, Columbia Naples Capital deployed in excess of $25 million in equity in companies in the outdoor recreation, industrial distribution, natural foods and maintenance outsourcing industries, many of which investments were led by Bob.

In 2001, Bob left Columbia Naples Capital to co-found North American Propane, Inc., which was a holding company for an approximately $125 million run-rate, residential and commercial energy distribution business that operated in New England and the Mid-Atlantic markets, and was sold to a strategic purchaser in 2012. Bob then decided to resume his legal career and joined LeClairRyan in Richmond as a specialist in mergers and acquisitions and sophisticated corporate transactions.

Bob is a member of the Development Committee of the John Marshall Foundation, and he is a former member of the boards of directors of the William and Mary Law School Association, the Commonwealth Catholic Charities and the Advisory Council of the Fraternity of St. Peter. He is active in the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, where he has served on the Finance Council and is currently chairman of the Parish Building Committee.
