As a partner in the firm’s real estate section and a member of the firm’s real estate securities practice group, Ed handles a broad array of commercial real estate matters. These include the purchase and sale of developed and undeveloped real estate, and the negotiation of related real estate financings, joint ventures and development-related work. Ed has developed a national reputation through his active engagement in all facets of real estate syndications (tenant in common syndications, Delaware statutory trust syndications, real estate funds, etc.), having represented many syndication sponsors since their very inception.

Prior to joining the firm, Ed was an equity shareholder with Hirschler Fleischer, a midsize Richmond firm. Prior to that, he held various legal positions in both the regulated and nonregulated arms of the Bell Atlantic Corporation, the predecessor to Verizon Communications. This extended association has provided Ed with access to a national clientele and given him a keen understanding of the corporate client’s specific legal and business perspectives.

Ed has served commercial real estate clientele with national exposure, with a particular emphasis on 1031 and fund syndications. He has represented borrowers in all facets and types of real estate and asset-backed financing, including representing borrowers in Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, commercial mortgage-backed security, life insurance and construction loan transactions. He is also called in to negotiate complex, large real estate transactions. Ed has negotiated and closed the acquisition and sale of a multitude of income-producing investment properties, including multifamily, assisted-living, office, hotel, retail and student housing projects.

Ed also enjoys teaching and has in the past regularly lectured on a variety of legal topics, including various real estate subjects, DSTs, TIC syndications, contract negotiations, trusts and estates matters, and entity formation and selection. He has been a frequent lecturer regarding TIC syndications, including presentations at Alternative & Direct Investment Securities Association and its predecessor Tenant in Common Association annual conferences. Ed has co-authored and edited various articles.

In his spare time, Ed is an avid traveler and a frequent attendee at The Americana music festival. Ed’s goal is to have the firm open a satellite office in Key West, his favorite vacation destination.
